Yoruba Values

Yoruba Values

Yoruba culture, which has been thriving for generations across the world, promotes values that are universal and guides our moral compass. These core values include:

1. Làákàyè (knowledge): Yoruba culture views knowledge as the cornerstone of a purposeful existence. Acquiring knowledge can be from experience, observation, and guidance from elders.

2. Ìwà Ọmọlúàbí (person of integrity): This is the epitome of the greatest moral principles and ethical behaviour that Yoruba people are required to uphold. It places a strong emphasis on developing a well-rounded character based on positive values.

3. Akínkanjú or Akin (valour), the courageous warrior: This idea goes beyond simple bravery on a physical level. It includes courage, resiliency, and the will to conquer obstacles.

4. Aníṣẹ́lápá (visible means of livelihood): This value emphasises the importance of self-reliance, perseverance, and hard labour. Yoruba people feel that meaningful labour leads to fulfilment and dignity.

5. Iyì (honour): This is the respect and dignity bestowed to those who exhibit exceptional morality and conduct. It includes traits like bravery, honesty, and kindness that earns one the respect and admiration of others in the community.

There is a saying in Yorùbá land that says “when you set out to look for money and you meet honour on the way then you don’t need the journey anymore, because if you get the money, you will still use it to buy honour.”

6. Ọrọ̀ (wealth): Prosperity is valued by the Yoruba culture, but not at the price of moral integrity. Instead of being seen as an indicator of personal achievement, wealth is seen as a blessing that should be shared and used for the good of the society.

Although ancient, these values still have a lot of significance in the modern world. They provide us with advice on how to develop good character, live upright lives, and make significant contributions to society.
